Job Summary
The Process Engineer position is a skilled quality assurance specialist who provides support for the SMSI Los Alamos, NM or Albuquerque office. The Process Engineer will serve as the primary point of contact with our Los Alamos clients and will be expected to develop strong professional relationships with their counterparts in our clients' organizations. The Process Engineer is responsible for developing, improving, and troubleshooting machine tools for manufacturing. The selected candidate will be responsible for identifying any process improvements and leading development activities on new, and current, CNC machine tools. Individuals working in this position will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure implementation and compliance with Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations, Quality, and Safety Management Programs for their area.
Responsibilities
  • Successful candidate will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Serve as a contributing member of the R&D and Operations teams to address engineering challenges.
  • Contribute at a fully functioning level to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D and Operations initiatives.
  • Assist in developing new methods, technologies, and analysis techniques for institutional programs.
  • Ensure programmatic objectives through the provision of project management and engineering support to successfully complete milestones.
  • Independently present specific aspects of engineering assignments at project meetings.
  • Performing scheduled internal audits, assessments, or surveillance on projects.
  • Reviewing and providing updates of the deficiency and corrective action tracking system.
  • Supporting project management by preparing corrective action plans/responses and/or verifying implementation of corrective and remedial actions identified during audits and assessments.
  • Propose technical solutions and alternatives on QA/QC matters.
  • Communicate with Merrick colleagues (Project Managers, Project Engineers, Technical Leads and Discipline Engineers) and the Client to assure that mutual expectations are well-defined and achieved.
  • Stay current on project and related quality issue's.
  • Support project team meetings as required.
  • Meet requirements for attendance and punctuality.
Requirements
  • A minimum of five (5) years of recent DOE project experience within the non-reactor nuclear industry.
  • A total of eight (8) years industry experience related to quality assurance.
  • Skilled worker experience in developing and implementing QA/QC programs.
  • Skilled worker knowledge of quality assurance regulatory, contractual, and technical documents (e.g. DOE O 414.1D, 10 CFR Part 830 Subpart A, and NQA-1-2008 and 2009 Addenda, NQA-1-2019).
  • Skilled worker experience in reviewing procedures and other documents to verify quality requirements are adequately addressed.
  • Skilled worker knowledge of construction QA activities supporting procurement and engineered products, including Commercial-Grade Dedication (CGD), work packages, and application of a graded approach in an NQA-1 environment.
  • Skilled worker knowledge to comprehend specified QA requirements in the application of these requirements to engineering, procurement, and construction practices.
  • Skilled worker experience participating in and supporting quality assessments, surveillance, and/or audits.
  • Skilled worker experience in ensuring quality assurance requirements are met during the design, bid, build, and start-up of nuclear, non-nuclear, high-, moderate-, and low-hazard facilities and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, specifications, and schematics.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills and demonstrated experience interacting and effectively communicating with all levels of project and client personnel.
  • Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and schedule tasks to ensure completion in accordance with requirements, deadlines, and budget.
  • Skilled knowledge of NQA-1 quality assurance including Part II, Subpart 2.7, Subpart 2.14, and DOE O 414.1D.
  • Moderate knowledge of welding and nondestructive examination standards, documentation, and worker qualifications (AWS D1.1, AWS D1.3, ASME Section IX, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASNT, ACI, etc.).
Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
