The Communication Design team is dedicated to visually empowering cutting-edge research through innovative design solutions, fostering understanding, and driving impactful outcomes. Managing projects of various sizes and scopes, we approach each with a commitment to our brand, blending our unique talents and perspectives to craft meaningful visual solutions. Through regular brainstorming sessions and design critiques, we refine our approach. We specialize in creating process and project documentation, information graphics, conceptual models, large-scale visual installations, signage systems, graphic recordings, web design, UI component development, animations, and kinetic visuals.

Position Summary

We are looking for a college student to join us as a summer intern. Applicants should be current students in a 4-year degree program focused on communications, covering both visual and written aspects. In this role, they will assist our designers in developing and maintaining design assets and processes while also supporting Technical Communications in updating various internal documents. This internship offers valuable professional experience and insight into the workings of our primary Communication Services teams. While it's an entry-level position, applicants should have a basic understanding of design principles and strong knowledge of English grammar. To be considered, submission of samples of visual and written work is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learn and utilize design software and tools under the guidance of experienced designers

  • Process and curate all incoming images for SEI Stock + Resources into appropriate division portals

  • Send image selection and confirmation emails for individual image collections

  • Cross-reference posted SEI Stock + Resources images with the HR database for photo release forms

  • Process and curate all newly created graphics and illustrations for various portals

  • Process and curate all new Collateral Library assets in SEI Stock + Resources

  • Organize and maintain project files and assets on the server that contain files to be uploaded to SEI Stock + Resources

  • Participate in design critiques and provide feedback on team projects

  • Assist in preparing and updating Communication Design portions of the NEOP presentations

  • Under the guidance of experienced writers, assist with researching current writing-style practices in technical fields, organize the findings to help the Technical Communications team prepare to update the SEI Style Guide, and participate in decision-making meetings.

  • Review designated web pages on the SEI website for consistency among similar elements

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a 4-year degree program.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.

  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and precision across all tasks.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively by communicating ideas and working harmoniously within a team environment.

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree granting program.

  • Able to work an internship schedule during the summer semester.

  • Able to come on-site to the SEI Pittsburgh office.

  • Eligibility to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

  • Candidates will be subject to a background check.

  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
