The Consumer Goods division of Georgia-Pacific is looking for qualified professionals to apply for their Quality Engineer position at their Wauna Mill in Clatskanie, OR.

This role will be responsible for creating, implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving the Quality system. This includes tracking and measuring quality metrics for daily operations according to the Quality Control Plan and meeting or exceeding customer expectations.

Also, this role will help with ensuring the reliability, effectiveness, maintenance, and ongoing improvements of the Safe Quality Foods (SQF) System, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Product Stewardship program.

This role is under the supervision of the Facility Quality Manager and works closely with the operations group. The Quality Engineer will also collaborate with the following groups to succeed in this role: Purchasing, Operations, Shipping, Receiving, Corporate Product Stewardship, Corporate Quality, Safety, Maintenance, Human Resources, and Operations Senior Leadership.



Our Team


The Wauna mill and its products play a vital role in GP's Consumer Products portfolio, which includes the well-known brands of Angel Soft, Sparkle and Vanity Fair. GP has invested a lot at Wauna in recent years to make competitive tissue and towel products, including a new tissue paper converting machine and palletizing robots. The mill also has a recent improvement to its Paper Machine process to enhance the mill's competitive position in its highly strategic operation for GP and a key part of the local community and economy.

The mill is located one hour North of Portland, and it is near Astoria OR and Clatskanie OR. Oregon has many attractions for outdoor lifestyles, such as hiking, mountains, and summer beach time.


What You Will Do

*Champion Product Safety and Quality certification programs

*Communicate to relevant personnel all information essential to ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of Quality systems for consumer products

*Collaborate with other GP resources to leverage knowledge and build a transformational quality system that achieves our vision

*Aid in the development and growth of quality inspectors and testers and validate their ability to accurately perform quality tasks

*Build capabilities within the department by sharing quality knowledge, validating the integrity of testing data, and driving the verification of quality systems - i.e. physical testing, visual inspections, compliance requirements

*Oversee the maintenance of testing labs and equipment - ensure the room conditions meet acceptable TAPPI standards, the calibration of all testing equipment is completed timely, and address any out of tolerance issues

*Support and assist with commercialization initiatives and product trials

*Investigate quality exceptions and the quarantine of off quality product - this may involve coaching/mentoring technicians on timely execution of testing or inspections to reduce amount of operational waste

*Investigate unplanned quality events by supporting operations on Root Cause Analysis' (RCAs) and ensure corrective actions are implemented that address the root cause to mitigate future risks

*Lead the investigation of off quality claims and complaints and ensure we are delivering timely resolutions and satisfying our customer requirements

*Provide operations with reports on key quality performance indicators

*Assist Manufacturing Engineers in the identification and measurement of key process variables to improve quality and sustain our run-to-target metrics

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

*Previous experience working within a product system that applies quality programs

*Previous experience working within an operation that utilizes standard inspection and physical testing methods

*Previous experience leading an initiative within the operation and working through others to accomplish goals

*Previous experience using Microsoft Office programs such as Word (to write business correspondence), Excel (for use of spreadsheets, reporting, simple formulas), Power Point, Teams, and Outlook (for internal and external correspondence)

*Must have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship


What Will Put You Ahead

*Bachelor degree or higher in Engineering OR +3 years of progressive experience in Quality within a manufacturing or industrial environment

*Previous experience with leading and facilitating the root cause and corrective action process

*Previous experience working in a pulp and paper operation

*Previous experience working in a union environment

*Previous experience with HACCP or SQF certifications and proven track record for related program management and implementation

*Previous experience with software tools such as PI Process Book, Microsoft PowerPoint, Star LIMS and SAP
